I have a bird that is skin and bones. He is constantly chirping and I know that when a bird is constantly chirping that it has something wrong. I have treated it for cocci and wormed. I have given vitamins. I am not sure what is wrong. There are NO other signs other than the chirping and the lack of weight. Any suggestions?

Sundy, not many folks will tell you, but those are also signs of one form of Myricks. Not much you can do for it once they have it.

WHAT??? Are you talking about merecks? I will have him tested if something happens and he dies. The state of Missouri will test your dead bird for free!! I did separate him, mix up some wet mash and he ate like he was starved...he stopped chirping. Is it possible that he was just low on the pecking order???

Hi Sundy this sounds like Leucosis this is a wasting disease and can pass to other birds but at a very slow rate, the birds will eat like crazy and gain no weight. I would put the bird down.

ok...maybe it is something that needs to be tested...I will give him a week to gain and if he hasn't gained anything, I will have him tested by the state. I certainly don't want anything to be passed to my healthy birds...I don't know how this bird would have gotten something so serious as you all have said it is...Thanks!

If you have a scale I would weigh the bird daily before feeding. Sometimes they are slowly gaining weight back but it doesn't show at first. keep record to see if he is recovering.

Hi Sundy this is a disease that causes the birds body to eat it self no matter how much they eat they will not gain weight. some birds get it some dont but in most cases it comes from the ground. it will not get any better.

Hi Sundy I would suggest anyone that raises poultry to get some sort of book on diseases this will save alot of time and money.

Thank you all for your help...one more question...if he does gain weight that will show he is ok, right? Since I have seperated him and fixed him mash, he quit chirping. I have a postal scale I will weigh him in the morning and see if he gains. He is seperated, so if he does have something, he won't give it to the other birds...hopefully!

Hi Sundy just look at it from this side he is skin and bones for a reason, something is wrong he will stop chirping when you keep feeding him because this helps easy the pain of his body eating itself I have seen this for years and there is not a good out come. But you can try and make him gain weight it is not going to hurt anything. You must forgive me for being this way about the birds but I do not mess around when it comes to something being wrong with a bird, it would be culled at a drop of a hat. I look at this way there is no need to let the bird just hang around and be in pain when I CAN END IT FOR THEM VERY FAST.

You can contact Peter Brown at State Vet and make preparations for this disease not to come up again! Jim
