Can someone tell me what causes blood to be on the laid eggs?  I have looked at my birds and the only one I think its coming from is one of my Wyandotes.  She had alot of driled fecis on her rear.   I cleaned her up .  All others look fine and I don't see any blood on  theirrear ends and they all seem fine.

Thanks

Sandy

Sometimes I see it too. I have some new layers that are doing that right now. I sometimes see it in a hen that hasn't laid for a while either. It is just little blood vessels that pop but I have yet to see it hurt a hen.

If you have a bird with a messy hind end, check for mites. I have had my first case of it this year already.

The blood on the egg as mentioned is pretty common in a young layer and not alarming. The  messy butt could also be a sign of worms or change of diet. Cleaning her up is a great start.. did you notice and scabs in the area? that would definitly point to the mites. When was she last dewormed? have you changed her diet? like extra greens or fruits or perhaps she had access to compost That often cause intestinal upsets and they love to dig through it.

I've had blood streaks on eggs when the hen is laying her first or second egg ever :)...  also on a couple of eggs laid by hens who had taken a break from laying over the winter, when they started up again.

I think it's just from stretching the vent ... it can't be very comfortable when it happens for the first time. I've never actually seen blood on the outside of a hen from this,

Could your hen have a tummy bug of some kind - is the poop normal, or diahhrea? If the poop looks bloody, it could be from coccidia, though that would be odd when the weather is still so cold. I've had luck getting chicks over coccidia just by moving their pen to new grass every day, it takes about 6 days to break the pooping coccidia -> eating coccidia cycle.
