Hi everyone:)

I would like to know what others have used to keep the feathers on their birds in top shape. I have moved most all my birds to the barn this winter because of the extreme cold temperatures here this year. I am not pleased with how dry the feathers have become. My barn has closed doors and screened windows (predator proof) with exhaust fans to keep dust out and air moving but the feathers are too dry and so is the skin. I add ground sunflower hearts and ground flax seeds to the feed. I recently started adding wheat germ oil (I am unsure how much of this oil they can have so I have only been adding a drop, maybe not enough but don't want to harm by birds) as well as brewers yeast. The shavings for bedding have added  to the problem as they are dry as well.

Any suggestions?

Donna, that is a great question and I hope someone answers pretty soon.  You have helped me all ready, I need to get some more sun flower seeds.

I never noticed how dry the skin is till my Silkie hen lost some of her crest feathers, and the skin under there on her poor naked vaulted knob is just like powder!  I felt like sticking oil on it!
