Just wanted to brag that my WC Black hen was Ch. AOCCL today at the Cascadia Spring Show.  It was a good day; my black araucana bantam hen was Reserve AOCCL too.  An interesting thing happened in that the judge kept going back to my WC Blue frizzle hen- who was in splendid condition and I thought was probably the best bird today, but then he put up the black.  Later, I asked the judge (Brian Decker) his thought process.  He said that blue must be laced and, as one cannot see the lacing on a frizzle, a wc blue therefore cannot be placed above BV.  He said that, with similar logic, he also could never put up a blue silkie.  I do not say that I agree with this and, indeed, a wc blue frizzle hatched from eggs of mine has already had a very nice win, I merely put it up for discussion.  I would like to know what veteran poultry exhibitors think of this.  I am not complaining, mind- I had a very nice day- I just wanted some opinions about the lacing issue.

Many congratulations on your wins!

As to blue frizzled Polish not having lacing..... What the heck is he talking about? it lacks some of the definition of a smooth feather but that is because its frizzled.........which is what she was bred to be.  Sounds like an excuse not to have to place them.

You see that all the time. I commend the judges that do look at the Polish and at frizzles because whether they like them or not there are some fine birds to be seen among them.

Care to chime in on this, Glen, I'd like a judge's opinion on whether I should be exhibiting my beloved wc blue frizzles, or my one blue silkie, for that matter.

I really did not want to get into this.  Technically, Brian is correct in the requirement for lacing on the blue frizzle and the blue silkie.  According to the standards, the blue must have a darker lacing on the feathers.  There is no exception listed for frizzles or silkies.  The judge should cut each feather section appropriately, according to the cuts listed in  the standard, for each section that does not have the required lacing.

Whether or not the bird can be place higher than BV is a judges decision as to whether the competition has more faults than the blue birds discussed.

Discussing this here on line, will only teach judges to look for that particular fault in the blue colored birds, and may in the long run tend to have them marked down on evaluations.

Blackstar is wrong in her statements about the judges thinking.  The judge must judge by the standard, not their preference.

By the way, I have made blue silkies shown champion when I thought it was the best bird in the show.  Did I miss it on color, Maybe, maybe not.  It was my opinion that the bird I marked as SHOW CHAMPION was the best bird.

Just my opinions.

Thanks, Glen.  Didn't mean to put you in a tough spot.  Just looking for more information.
