There were only 2 exhibitors at the APA Semiannual show in Stevenson WA yesterday. Shirley Gilbert was there with 2 birds she hatched from eggs I shipped her last year, so I guess they were sort of all mine. Anyway, it rained like a son of a gun and I'll bet all those people who voted against having an APA show in Washington because "It always rains," felt very vindicated. I say with all seriousness that this area, Stevenson, WA, on the Columbia Gorge, with its "Bridge of the Gods" and its waterfalls, lakes, and mountains, is like the land time forgot. It is as beautiful as anywhere in the world or any national park- if you can see it. Well, you couldn't yesterday. Anyway, there were stunning birds here from CA and other mostly Western states that definitely kicked the competition up a knotch. My WC black hen was Reserve Champion AOCCL to Brian Decker's Cornish and I was delighted. Then, at dinner, the judge said, "The Cornish and Polish at this show could go anywhere in the nation and win." Well, THAT was a nice thing for a short- time exhibitor like me- I was over the moon. My son Rob got Reserve Champion Waterfowl with his call duck and neither of us did anything with our araucana. I sold a few Poiish chicks and could have sold dozens but I've hatched mainly males this year and didn't want to bring a bunch to disappoint new owners in a few months. I did sell a really nice pair to an adult exhibitor who seems seriously interested in the breed, and 2 really good pairs and bottom prices to adorable kids who made me smile. All in all, a really great day. | |
